I wandered alone through the Lego store,
Displays of castles, ships, and more.
The hour was late, the lights dimmed low,
Not another soul around, just me on the go.
A glimmer caught my eye from the polished floor,
A single golden brick I hadn't noticed before.
It shimmered with light that seemed its own,
A curious object, mysteriously thrown.
I bent down slowly and picked it up,
The golden piece warm in my palm cupped .
"How strange," I whispered to the silent shop,
When suddenly my fingers began to transform.
My skin hardened, smoothed to plastic sheen,
My body compressed, my limbs grew lean,
My joints stiffened with mechanical clicks.
As I shrank down to three inches thick!
My hands curved to perfect yellow claws,
My legs fused together, unable to sprawl.
My purple hair, now a plastic helmet crown,
And in my grip, a star wand with magic bound.
I gasped, but no sound escaped my face,
Just painted lips frozen in permanent awe.
The world around me had grown immense,
As display sets towered like mountain draws.
Then a rumble and creak that shook the floor,
As dragons from their boxes took to flight!
Their plastic wings now beating true,
Scales glimmering in the moonlit blue.
A pirate ship sailed across the air,
Its captain waving with a hearty cheer.
"Welcome, welcome to Bricks Alive!
The midnight hour when we all thrive!"
From the ocean corner came delighted squeals,
Where mermaids arranged a whimsical feast.
"Come join our tea!" they called to me,
Their tails flipping with joyful glee.
They poured tiny drops from teapots small,
Into thimble cups for one and all.
"We've waited ages for someone new,
Someone magical with a wand like you!"
I raised my star wand, unsure of its power,
When sparkles burst forth like a glittering shower.
The toys all cheered as colors danced,
Through the store's dark aisles, magically enhanced.
Knights bowed deep from castle walls,
Astronauts floated through makeshift halls.
Dinosaurs roared from prehistoric scenes,
As race cars zoomed through the in-betweens.
"But how," I asked, my voice now found,
"Do I return to my human form?
And do I even want to leave this place,
Where plastic dreams have come to warm?"
The eldest dragon, with wisdom deep,
Perched upon my shoulder with gentle feet.
"The golden brick that brought you here,
Can return you home, if that's your fear."
"But remember this," the mermaid queen said,
As she crowned me with pearls upon my head,
"Once you've lived in the world of play,
A part of you will always stay."
I danced with ninjas, built towers tall,
Rode dragons that soared above it all.
My star wand creating magical light,
Throughout our Lego kingdom's night.
When morning's first light threatened our fun,
I had to decide: stay or be undone?
The golden brick waited, my ticket back,
To a world of flesh, of weight and lack.
I clutched my wand, touched my purple hair,
Looked at friends made in one night so rare.
The dragons circled in farewell flight,
The mermaids waved from waters bright.
With one last spell from my starry staff,
I created a rainbow bridge with a laugh.
Then picked up the brick with plastic hand,
And made my choice to understand...
That magic exists in the strangest of places,
In golden bricks and painted faces.
Whether human or toy, the heart still finds,
Adventure in what it leaves behind.
Now I visit the store when moon is high,
Leave a golden brick on the floor nearby.
And sometimes, if you're brave enough to see,
You might just find the magic key.
To a world where dragons soar with glee,
Where mermaids host a midnight tea.
And a purple-haired figure with starry light,
Welcomes new friends on a plastic night.
Well done Maryellen, well done!! You had my attention throughout the entire piece, with all its whimsy and airy flow. You perfectly encapsulated in your writing the spirit of Lego and of our poetry prompt. Be proud of yourself, this was beautiful!
