Cozy Chaos
A Millcreek Story
The branch held Bartelby's weight without complaint. He settled into the crook of it, tail wrapped neat, and let the shadows embrace the rest of him. Ebony fur first, then the pale patch on his chest, then the outline of him entirely, until only his eyes remained. This town hall was curious.
Below, the Cascadia Meeting Room churned with cozy chaos. A neighbor brought fairy cakes. Actual ones? With actual wings? That would be tasty.
Rose sat down, arms crossed, nodding to herself. What was she cataloging?
Paddles the puffin waddled through and stared down a treat like it owed him money.
“We just need an interim mayor,” one of the Daves said, standing near the refreshment table. “Simple as that.”
“Which Dave are you?” Someone muttered.
“Does it matter?” said second Dave, from across the room. “We're basically the same guy.”
“I think Maple's invisible now,” the first Dave announced. “That's my theory.”
“Invisible how,” Rose asked, not looking up from her tea.
“Don't know. Just a feeling.”
Then Rose looked directly into Bartelby's eyes for a moment before she returned to her whispers with Dave.
Humans built entire villages out of hunches wearing confident hats. They called it governance. He'd watched worse systems glued together with less.
Jen ~ the librarian, stood at the front with her index cards, patient as a woman herding cats. Bartelby supposed, she practically was with this lot.
“Firsthand information first,” Jen said. “Rumors after. We'll sort them all.”
“I heard she walked through a door that wasn't there before,” someone offered.
“That's practically every door in this village, though,” Rose said. “That's just Monday."
A ripple of laughter warmed the gathering. The Mayor's absence was a mild inconvenience like being served tuna instead of salmon. Bartelby appreciated that about this place. They were a curious lot in a curiouser land.
He watched Phoenix's shoulders stay tight through every laugh. She was the only one in the room treating tonight like an impending storm was brewing. His favorite of the neighbors.
Her porcelain teacup sat at her elbow. He watched her drink from it, set it down, look away toward Jen's index cards, and it filled itself back to the brim. Steam curling fresh, exactly as it did the first time.
The room simply accepted infinite tea the way it accepted everything else. Gratefully.
Bartelby noticed. Just like he noticed Phoenix's sparkle. It was as if fireflies enveloped her aura.
A pair of eyes across the room caught his, and held his gaze. Hildegard sat perfectly still atop a bookshelf near the door. Tail curled tight. Watching him watch the room. Recognition without introduction, understanding without a single sound passed between them. Her eyes held something older than the village. Curious. A knowing so settled into her, it barely needed blinking to express itself.
She dipped her chin, once. An acknowledgment.
Bartelby returned the gesture. Equally unbothered by the neighbors arguing interim leadership six feet below them both. Whatever Hildegard knew, she carried it the same way he carried his mysteries.
Below, Phoenix stood.
The room hushed. Bartelby watched something private cross her face. Gone before it reached her mouth.
Mystery writer extraordinaire. She still hadn't noticed the tea. Or the tree that grew outside a window it never possessed twenty-four hours ago.
You keep asking this village for its rules, Bartelby thought as she sat back down among scattered murmurs and half-resolved arguments. Her tea refilled itself yet again. You keep forgetting to ask who & what you are inside them.
Bartelby's eyes narrowed in the dark, mildly delighted despite himself.
My Creativity is fueled by tea. Lots and lots of tea. 🫖☕️🫖

I wonder if Millcreek will just end up being run by cats with the humans allowed to stay as well-cared for pets? 😆
Those cats! They know things about the village… they see things the people miss.
