The mountain shrank in the rearview mirror. Not fast enough. Daniel drove with both hands steady now.
The corridor behind them, the open ash road ahead. No one spoke for the first mile. The silence, full of everything that happened. It all needed time to settle before anyone could put language to it.
Alyssa turned the music up. A classic selection, titled ‘Bach to Happiness’.
Melissa stared at her hands in her lap.
Nikki wrote in her notebook. The scratch of pen upon paper, the only sound from her.
Rita sat between Melissa and Alyssa with Mr. Buttons under her arm. Her father's jacket around her shoulders, as she watched the landscape change outside the window.
Volcanic rock. Stripped trees. Ash that danced in Sweet Salvation's wake like it was trying to follow them.
“Mina,” Ignacia said. “George.”
“On it.” Mina’s fingers danced over her equipment. She pulled up the thermal tracking and searched the terrain two miles off the main road where they'd left him. The creek. The cold water. His promise to anchor himself there until they came back.
His signature appeared on her screen. Faint. But present.
“He's there,” Mina said. “Weakened. But still there.”
“How weakened?” Daniel asked.
Mina hesitated as she glanced toward Rita. “Enough that we don't wait.”
Daniel turned off the main road. The terrain was hostile.
Volcanic rock and pumice cooling since 1980. Sweet Salvation was not built for this adventure. She was built for roads. Asphalt. The infrastructure of a world that no longer reliably existed. She complained through stressed suspension and unhappy tires.
Daniel drove her through it anyway.
Ignacia closed her eyes and extended her heat sense. She tracked George by the specific signature of his warmth. She'd learned his thermal pattern in the hours they'd driven together. The particular pulse of someone fighting the conversion with love as his primary weapon.
She could feel him ahead. Dim. Strained. Still him.
“Left,” she said.
Daniel drove left.
The creek announced itself by the temperature differential. Cold water meeting volcanic warmth. It produced a shimmer that Ignacia's heat-sense read as relief. Water. Cold. Exactly what she'd told him to find.
“There,” she said.
Sweet Salvation's headlights caught the creek first. Then the figure beside it.
George was on his hands and knees at the water's edge, forearms submerged to the elbow. The position of someone using every technique available. His thermal signature up close was more strained than Mina's equipment had shown. Brighter in the wrong places. The conversion advanced within him. The mountain's pull cost him.
His head popped up when he heard Sweet Salvation. He'd ridden in her long enough to know her voice.
Rita had the door open before the truck stopped moving.
“Rita—” Melissa reached for her and missed.
Gone. Feet on volcanic ash, running, her father's jacket streaming behind her. Mr. Buttons gripped in her fist as she rushed toward her father.
George stood up. It took effort. Three attempts. His knees found purchase on rock. Arms pulled away from the water that held him together. Steam rose from his forearms. He shook. The glow in his veins deepened. The cracks more pronounced since the last time.
Rita reached him. She didn't slow down. She ran directly into him. George caught her. He dropped to his knees, making himself her height. His arms went around her with precision. The careful touch of an infected dad.
“Daddy,” she said into his neck.
“Hey, baby.” His voice was garbeled with tears.
She pulled back and looked at his face. Taking inventory. The cracks. The glow. The evidence of what the last several hours cost him. When she was done she held up Mr. Buttons.
One button eye. Singed ribbon. Missing ear.
“He waited,” she said.
“Good,” he managed. “That's good.”
Rita tucked Mr. Buttons back under her arm and took George's hand in both of hers. She held it.
The crew stayed by the truck.
Alyssa's tears streamed down her face.
Daniel's hand pressed flat against Sweet Salvation's chilled side.
Nikki wrote nothing. Just watched. Her notebook closed for once, her pen still.
Ignacia felt the warmth inside her surge and settle. Love was doing what the warmth could never do—holding someone in place, by choice.
George's thermal signature stabilized quickly. The magic of father & daughter reunited.
Rita's asked, “Can you walk to the truck, Daddy?”
“Yeah, baby.” George let her help him up. “Yeah, I can walk.”
Melissa settled George into the medical section while Rita installed herself beside him. Ignacia began the first proper teaching session. Breathing techniques and thermal regulation.
George was a good student. He'd been practicing alone for days. The framework was there. He just needed someone to confirm he'd been doing it right.
“You were,” Ignacia told him. “You held on.”
“I had help,” he said, looking at Rita.
Rita examined his forearms with one careful finger. She traced the cracks without fear. “Careful baby. No one wants you infected.”
“Is the mountain still loud?" she asked.
George listened. The pull was still there. “Quieter,” he said.
“Good.” She took his hand again. “We'll keep making it quieter.”
Daniel drove north. The mountain disappeared from the rear view mirror.
Mina's equipment tracked the signatures at the mountain's base. They still multiplyied. Answering Bradley's call.
George's breathing steadied. Rita's grip on his hand didn't loosen. The red ribbon caught what light remained.
The road went forward.
They followed it. Together.
Their next challenge. Undoing the tracking. Bradley could see them. That was unsettling.

Yay! George is okay!
